The Old Town with serial number 139697 is a lapstrake motorboat and 139597 is a 25 foot long war canoe model so those aren't a good match. My guess is that you probably have serial number 139591. This is a 16 foot long, AA (or top) grade, Yankee model with red western cedar planking, open ash gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, half ribs, a keel, outside stems, and rub rails. It was built between March and May, 1944. The original exterior paint color was orange above the rub rails and green below. It was shipped on June 8th, 1944 to Auburndale, Mass. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to donate or renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer this description doesn't match the canoe. The link below is for an identical canoe that shipped on the same order. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Chuck,

After you get the canoe home post a couple pictures. I'm curious if it was caned seats or slat seats being a war time build. It was shipped from Old Town two days after D-Day. My father, at 18 years old, was in the middle of the Atlantic at the time on his way to Europe.
