159836-20

The Old Town with serial number 159836 is a 16 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, HW (heavy water) model with a keel, and sponsons. It was built between April and September, 1953. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on September 10th, 1953 to Hamilton, Georgia.

A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

If your canoe is 20 feet long then which digit in this number is the least clear? Pictures of the numbers from each end would help. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?791 may also be useful. Please reply here if you have other questions. Thanks,

Benson

The Old Town canoe with serial number 159636 is a 20 foot long, AA (or top) grade, Guide's model with half ribs, a keel, a floor rack, and rub rails. It was built between April and May, 1953. The original exterior paint colors were similar to the ones shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design45.gif which was known as the design number 45. It shipped on June 2nd, 1953 to Pittsburgh, Penna.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you. This looks like the correct canoe. I will pass this information along to some of our Camp leaders. The canoe is a ceremonial canoe at a Boy Scout Camp. I have been chasing the build records under incorrect serial numbers. I think the camp acquired the canoe in the early 1980's. It was stripped of canvas and fiberglassed. The seats and thwarts have been replaced and outside summer storage has wrecked the deck plates, gunwhales, keel, fiberglass and rub rail. The inside varnish is in bad shape. I will send a few photos. I am chasing materials and reference books suggested by you to rebuild this canoe as well as 171744-18 that I recently obtained.

Again many thanks -- I will stay in touch as I learn more about this canoe's history.
