Hey yall. My brother was just given an older wooden canoe. The serial number is 15859 and we think either a 4 or a 1 at the end, then seperate from the rest a 17. If anyone has any information about it thatd be great.

Thanks

Hi,

158591 is a 17' canoe and 158594 is a 15' Lapstrake, so we'll go with the former.

Your brother was given a 17 foot, CS grade (Common Sense or middle grade) HW model (Heavy Water) equipped with a keel and sponsons. The build record does not specify which woods were used but for the CS grade the planking and ribs were cedar, the gunwales and inwales were spruce and the decks, seats and thwarts were hardwood - ash, oak, maple or birch - most probably ash. The canoe was built in 1952-53, painted dark green and sold to a man in Philadelphia, PA.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe.

Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
