"Tiger Rag" back on the tidal Potomac
In Memoriam
Would someone please post the build sheet for what is probably OT 126087. Thanks.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 126087 is a 17 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, Otca model with open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, a keel, and a floor rack. It was built between December, 1938 and May, 1939. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on June 3rd, 1939 to Marietta, Penna. The canoe was returned for extensive repairs on December 22nd, 1949 as shown on the back side of the card. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

These scans and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson

Thanks, Benson. This confirms my suspicions. A couple weeks ago I'd asked whether anyone had seen a Thompson with an Abercrombie & Fitch tag on it. This was the boat, and it didn't look Thompson-ish to me. It is presently located near Harrisburg, PA. Your comment about extensive repairs seems correct, but what I saw isn't entirely explained by those notes on the back of the sheet. Through the middle portion of the canoe there are about 8 or 10 "extra ribs", by which I mean that white cedar about 1.5 inches wide so that it fits in between the existing ribs was bent, installed, and is tacked to the inwales just as a rib would be. I didn't bother to inspect more closely, as I lost interest at that point. Tom McCloud
