Looking for stripper plans

Curious about Wooden Canoes
I'm looking for plans to build a Jack's Special (Chum) and / or a Minetta. I can't find them online and, so far, the closest I've come is seeing mentions of them on this site or canoetripping-dot-net (I can't post that as a link yet or Benson will nuke me).

So far, I've completed a Bear Mountain Freedom Solo (16'3" version) and am nearly finished with a John Winters Raven build. (Fair warning: So far, I've used non-traditional woods [cedar is expensive here] and that's unlikely to change)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Benson. I looked on carrying place's website but can't find how to order... I'll send them an e-mail. I was hoping for downloadable so I could start tomorrow but we'll see...

Steve, I was at a meeting of the Northeastern Woodworkers Association here in Albany NY, and a fellow member showed me a picture of the canoe he built. It was beautiful and I said, oh it's a cedar strip canoe! No, he said, it's actually basswood!

I get that all the time... "oh, you built a Cedar strip..." "No, actually, that one's Aspen" (last was Tamarack, next is White Pine. Then Catalpa, maybe Cypress... who knows?)

Thanks Dan. I was looking at Alex's offerings a bit yesterday. I didn't see a Jack's Special (Chum?- I think they're the same hull) or the Minetta (which had also been recommended to me but he has some interesting tandems & I've got a granddaughter on the way.

I'd planned on doing a tandem out of Catalpa & Butternut a few solos from now and his prices are certainly reasonable. I've bookmarked him.

Hi Steve.

I'm lurking around and happened on your post about Carrying place plans. Carrying Place Canoes is not in business anymore. Joe Ziemba passed away some years ago. I talked to his wife last year and she told me that she was hoping that someone would take over the business. The plans will be unavailable until further notice. So all there is from their designs are those lines plan overviews.

The Jack's Special/Chum would probably be a very fast and efficient hull with nice glide because of it's fairly round bottom and narrow beam. If you study the lines plan carefully, especially the buttocks lines, you can see some strange shapes though.
I could make you plans for the Jacks Special that are fair but I would rather advice you to get the plans for the J.G Brown/Lorna 16' which is similar but probably a better hull shape than the Jacks special. Bear mountain plans are also stellar. The J.G Brown /Lorna is round bottomed and narrow so it should be a very nice and fast canoe with effortless glide, even more so than the Jack's is my guess. It will probably feel a little tender and nervous at first but you will quickly get used to it. After that most other canoes will probably feel like hogs though.

Attached is the profile view of Jack's special. Study the buttock lines. There is something not right with these. Maybe the original plans are better, or they would be better if they were available.

I built the cobalt blue canoe on the right off a Joe Ziemba form.
Yes, the bottom is rounded, but it handles very nicely, even soloing a 16 footer.

Thanks guys. I'll check out the Lorna for sure. Since posting this, I've started on a Merlin and had 2 people send pdf plans of other hulls so I'll be busy for awhile.

I'm assuming you mean the NWC Merlin? It should be a great hull. Not for big guys with heavy gear, but a good straight tracking light tripper.

Yes, NWC Merlin. Seems very similar to my Freedom solo (maybe a little more rocker) and I suspect it may wind up as a day tripper (although I've been 10 days+ in the Freedom). I built a John Winters Raven earlier this winter and I think it will be my expedition tripper going forward (despite the weight- I used Tamarack instead of Cedar).
