Peterborough Cedar Rib Rudder

Nick Dennis

WCHA UK
Having picked up a set of lee boards from Dan Miller at the Assembly which are more in keeping with the age of my canoe I am now looking at the rudder. Does anyone have any ideas what shape the rudder would have been? I have in mind to build one and replicate the lee board shape to keep everything looking aesthetically correct.

Thanks,

Nick

I've not been able to find a canoe rudder illustrated in any of the Peterborough catalogs available at http://store.wcha.org/The-Canadian-Wood-Canoe-and-Boat-Company-Catalog-Collection-CD-ROM.html but I may have missed something. The descriptions in the 1927 catalog offered a wooden rudder for $3 or a "steel drop blade rudder" for $7. The 1921 catalog showed square bottomed rudders on the skiffs and rounded ones on the dinghys as shown below. The pictures at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?4107 show the progression of rudder shapes on Old Town canoes over time. Let us know what you decide.

Hi Nick - Apologies for responding without an answer. I've looked and looked but cannot yet find any more rudder info in my materials than Benson did. Any luck with info from the Canadian Canoe Museum?

I wanted to respond to your photo - nice haul of loot from the Assembly! It was great to meet you there. Looking forward to next year!
