The Old Town canoe with serial number 121172 is an 18 foot long, GS (Guide Special or utility) grade, guide model with open spruce gunwales, oak decks, oak thwarts, oak seats and a keel. It was built between April and June, 1937. The original exterior paint color was G. S. (Guide's Special) green. It shipped on June 19th, 1937 to Old Mission via Traverse City, Michigan on June 26th, 1937. The back side of the record indicates that it was reshipped to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found below.
These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.
It is also possible that this canoe could have another number or manufacturer if the description doesn't match. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
Floor racks are occasionally added later but sponsons are usually done at the factory. Can you attach some pictures of the serial numbers from both ends of the canoe? Thanks,
The records for 121191 and 121192 show 17 and 15 foot long canoes respectively but neither one had sponsons or a floor rack. Some pictures of the numbers and a confirmation of the length would help. Thanks,
I don't own it yet. But was checking it out first. It is listed as 16 ft Old Town. But they may be incorrect and it isn't an Old Town. Could it be a Carleton?
My guess is that this is the canoe with serial number 121171 and the build record is available at the link below. It is 16 feet long and the floor rack may have been added after it shipped. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck,
