Varnishing Outer gunwales

Do I give the OG's the final varnish after I install them and cover up the screws that are securing them or do I install them after they are varnished? Will this create a more waterproof seal by each screw or just a future restoration nightmare? Thanks

I think every canoe I've done has had varnish in the screws. Or paint. Not a problem. If I have to I use a heat gun and dental pick. Only takes a second. I do my final varnish after installation. I don't bed the screws with dofinite, but I do apply bees wax.
