Upper Great Lakes Regional Assembly 2016

The Fourth Annual Upper Great Lakes Regional Assembly will take place in Marquette MIchigan August 19-21. This event is sponsored by three WCHA Chapters: Michigan, Upper Peninsula Michigan, and Great Rivers (Wisconsin/Illinois). The event rotates from year-to-year among sites located by each of these chapters, and the U.P. Chapter will host the 2016 event at Marquette's Tourist Park.

I am posting this in the "Open Forum" so that folks would know the event is OPEN TO ALL, whether you live anywhere near the Great Lakes or belong to the WCHA-- and whether or not you even have a canoe. Please spread the word, if you know anyone who will be vacationing in the area-- tell them to stop over.

FRIDAY evening there will be a social gathering in the Marquette Commons-- with food, music, and a guest speaker.

SATURDAY the 20th will be the Big Day, with many canoes displayed (please bring what you have, in any stage of restoration!), vendors, and demonstrations. We will have a special place set aside for those canoes that are at least 100 years old (we plan to WOW the public!). There is direct water access for paddling. There will be food.

SUNDAY will consist of several paddling-options, and if Lake Superior is calm enough for our open canoes, paddling the big lake will be one of the options. When we held this event in Marquette three years ago, several people took advantage of Superior's calm waters that day.

Marquette is a tourist magnet in the summer and there are many hotels, motels, and restaurants in the area. Tourist Park has campsites for RVs and for tents. There are many wonderful places to paddle in the Marquette area, and it's a great place to stop if you are on your way to paddling any area near the Great Lakes.

A Registration form can be found below. Also below is a list of alternative campgrounds, as the camping area in Marquette's Tourist Park is filling up fast. Craig and Judy Kitchen have space for additional tents at their campsites, and if you are a tent-camper please contact them. If you have any additional questions, you may contact them or contact me.

Attached is the program for Friday night, August 19th. Note that the location of the event-- the Marquette Commons-- is near a micro-brewery and some foody-places if the refreshments provided by the U.P. Chapter seem insufficient! Additionally, you will save $5 by registering for the Regional Assembly now, rather than at the last minute, and it helps us understand the number of folks-- and canoes-- we can anticipate.

Thanks!
