Jeff Dean
Co-Founder, Wooden Canoe Heritage Association
Tom Mackenzie, who died late in 2015, built birchbark canoes and also small, Ceconite-covered solo canoes, which were his "My Bug" series. His papers and some canoes are at the Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Museum. Tom was also a key figure in the early years of the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association, participated in its founding, and led many annual Assemblies with his wife, Karen. My cover photo of one of Tom's birchbark canoes, below, was taken on the Wisconsin River. There was an award-winning article about Tom in that issue of Wisconsin Trails.
