the history of my canoe #127544 17

Hello--

Old Town 127544 is a 17 foot CS (common sense or middle) grade HW model canoe (completed April 1939-January 1940) that was shipped as a Carleton-- this means (from my understanding, that is) that the buyer ordered a Carleton and this canoe was shipped to fill that order. It has open spruce gunwales, a keel, sponsons, and was originally dark red. The wood species used for trim isn't mentioned, but would be any hardwood other than mahogany. The HW commonly is trimmed with ash or birch, but oak or maple are also possibilities. Planking is probably red Western cedar. The canoe was shipped to New Castle, Indiana, on July 8, 1940. An inquiry was made from Toledo, OH, on April 26, 1976. Copy of the scan of both sides of this record is below-- click to get a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Kathy

Dear Kathy,
A little more info... it was that my now deceased brother picked it up in Ohio and was told that it was made for the local Boy Scout Camp there. It was his wish to restore the canoe but because of his illness he was unable to do the restoration. I just would like to get it into a competent restorer's hands so it will complete my brother Dave's wishes. Thanks so much for your help.
