A well built wooden canoe is a work of art
Three different foreign owned corporations are proposing to operate toxic copper-nickel mines in northern Minnesota. One is within the watershed feeding the BWCA, the largest US wilderness area east of the Rockies and north of the Everglades. Copper-nickel mines have a terrible track record of accidents and pollution around the world. An all too likely accident at the proposed mine would risk catastrophic pollution throughout the BWCA and Canada's adjacent Quetico Provincial Park, and permanently destroy one of the world's best wilderness canoeing areas.
Save the Boundary Waters, Inc. is a Minnesota non-profit leading the fight to protect the BWCA against the proposed mine. Former local WCHA chapter head Barry Christenson and I recently built and donated a Cheemaun as the grand prize in their current sweepstakes. Please consider entering the sweepstakes at the website below, to protect canoe country and a chance to win the loon canoe pictured here.
