Here's a neat old book available online at Archive.org that might interest some folks..

Souvenir of the Charles River - Published 1904

Lots of great zoomable images, some vintage ads from historic companies like Rushton & Morris...though I was partial to the ad for Lowney's Chocolate Bon-Bons. There's also an ad for "T.J. Shaw & Co. - Manufacturer of Canoe Paddles"...assuming this eventually became the Shaw & Tenney paddle manufacturers of today.

The advertisement for T. J. Shaw & Co. on page 22 may be for another company at 150 Commercial Street in Boston. The Shaw & Tenney history page at http://www.shawandtenney.com/history.htm says that "The company originated as the Orono Manufacturing Company in 1858." It goes on to state that "In the 1890's, Orono Manufacturing, then owned by Frank Tenney, merged with a Boston-based business called the George Shaw Company that also made paddles and oars. The business moved to Orono's Main Street and remained there until around 1950 when it moved to the current location, 20 Water Street in Orono, Maine."

There is also a T. J. Shaw catalog on the Historic CD that lists them at 166 Commercial Street in Boston as shown below but this document is not dated. There may be some other connection though.

The image on the title page was a popular one. It was also used in a 1908 Iver Johnson catalog advertising Morris canoes which is also on the Historic CD. Thanks for sharing this,

Benson

Seems that there is a good chance this publication, "Souvenir of the Charles River", may date to 1904. See the ad for Waltham Canoes, below, which is about two pages in. This refers to a prize won in 1896, and also to their "new model for 1904". BTW, the url for the booklet is: http://www.archive.org/stream/souvenirofcharle00jone#page/n1/mode/2up. clicking this will save several steps to find it.

See also page 34, which talks about the 1904 season, and the Rushton ad which mentions "Big Chief" canoes, which were only in his 1904 catalog, so far as I know.

Curiously, the canoe which is featured with the young lady ("A Prize Winner," for example) is a Carleton Canoe Company canoe, rather than a canoe by one of the Charles River builders...

This souvenir is not a common piece by any means.
