Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hi Benson or Dan,

Can you look up the following numbers for me please?

17745 is an 18 foot Kennebec
118697-17 is an Old Town
168764-25 is an Old Town war canoe
132784-16 is an Old Town boat
115364-18 is an Old Town 18 foot guide model
125616-16 is an Old Town
The last one starts 8825 then either a 3 or an 8. It is an 18 foot Old Town Otca.

Thank you very much.

Scott

WOW - Scott, did you fall into an inheritance, or are you just funnin' with us? Here goes...

118697 is a 17' HW in CS grade with oak decks. It was bright red and shipped to Macy's in Long Island City (Queens) in June 1937.

132784 is a 16' Sea Model in CS grade, 60" decks, side seats in the stern, wide seats with folding backs and was painted Dark Green/Tropical Green. It was delivered to Bath Maine in May of 1943.

115364 is an 18' Guide, in GS grade with spruce rails, oak decks, seats & thwarts. It was painted GS Green and delivered to Pittsfield, MA in June of 1936.

125616 is a 16' HW in CS grade, spurce rails and birch decks, seats & thwarts. It was Dark Greem and delivered in June 1939 to Willsboro, NY.

88253 seems to be the right number - it is an 18' Otca in AA grade with mahogany trim. Painted dark green and delivered to Indian Lake NY in June 1927. FYI - 88258 is a 16' Otca - probably not your boat.

Build Records are attached. I did not have time to get the two others.

Scans of approximately 210,000 records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. Please join WCHA or make a tax deductable contribution so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join. If you are already a WCHA member, THANK YOU!

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Here is another...

168764 is a 25' War Canoe delivered to Lewes DE in April 1960. It was Dark Green. I think Benson will have to provide the info on the Kennebeck.

The Kennebec canoe with serial number 17745 is shown on pages 217 and 218 of volume three in the Kennebec ledgers. This was assigned to an 18 foot long Kennebec Model, type a. It was planked by Beaudry on February 9th, 1924. The canvas covering was applied by Tuttle on February 16th, 1924 and Grant applied the first filler coat on the same day. The second filler coat was applied by Dulac on February 23rd, 1924. It was railed by Ames on the same day. The original paint color was red. The shipping date was March 6th, 1924 to location "24-83". This location is probably an order number but we don't currently have enough information to identify it. The original Kennebec records are stored at the Maine State Museum. I am unable to attach a scan of these records since their policies do not permit any electronic reproduction of their materials.

The microfilms of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA). I hope that you will join or contribute to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join.

More information about this and other Kennebec models can be found in the Kennebec catalogs contained on the Historic Wood Canoe and Boat Company Catalog Collection CD available from http://merchandise.wcha.org/ and http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/cdrom.htm on the web.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
