serial # search

I have a few suggestions. How about if you provide some basic information about the boat or canoe so that the volunteers (like me) don't need to chase down a laundry list of numbers? What is the overall extreme length of the canoe in a straight line? Can you provide some pictures of the entire area around the serial numbers on the stems in each end? The tips at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?791 may help if some of the digits aren't clear. Pictures of the bow deck area, the interior, and a few overall shots could help too. This could speed up the identification process considerably. Thanks,

Benson

Your message and picture below sent to the webmaster indicated that you think this canoe is an 18 foot long HW with sponsons. I have checked the records for 43585, 43583, 43565, 43563, 45563, 45583, 45585, 45565, 45536, 45533, 143585, 143583, 143565, 143563, 145563, 145583, 145585, 145565 and haven't found an 18 foot canoe with sponsons. Do the sponsons look like they were put on at the factory or could they have been a later addition? The record for 45536 show below seems like a promising one at the moment but it doesn't appear to have sponsons noted on the build record when it left the factory. This is another situation where more pictures could help, especially one showing the numbers from the other end. Thanks,

Benson

Hard to discern the numbers with this image... A low-angle light source would probably reveal a whole lot more than this image shows. Also, get pictures of the SN at both ends... using the low-angle light for both.

I agree with your guess that you may have the Old Town canoe with serial number 45566. This is an 18 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, HW (heavy water) model with red western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, a keel, floor rack, sponsons and a bang plate along the full length of the keel. It was built between October, 1916 and June, 1917. The original exterior paint was dark olive (?) with Spring Hills written on the right bow. It shipped in 1917 to Michigamme, Michigan. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Is the bang plate still on the middle of the keel or any signs of old screw holes there? Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Thanks,

Benson
