Hello Benson and all,
I appreciate WCHA's work on preserving these records, and I'm happy to join/ contribute.
We have three vintage Old Town canvas canoes with the following serial numbers:
103019 (15')
108190 (17' I think)
147192 (15')
We'd appreciate having any information and material linked to these numbers (ledgers, build records, dates, places, etc.).
Thanks,
Mac

Welcome, the Old Town canoe with serial number 103019 is a 15 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, fifty pound model with red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, and a keel. It was built between September, 1929 and January, 1930. The original exterior paint color was bright red. It shipped on January 28th, 1930 to Boston, Massachusetts.

The link below has the information about serial number 108190 from a previous request.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 147192 is a 15 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, fifty pound model with Maine white eastern cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash cane seats, and a keel. It was built between December, 1946 and February, 1947. The original exterior paint color was maroon. It shipped on March 15th, 1947 to Center Sandwich, New Hampshire.

Scans of these build records can be found below. These scans were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/pricing-plans/join to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another numbers or manufacturers if these descriptions don't match. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson,

Thanks for your work looking into the three canoes I wrote you about. I can confirm that all three of these canoes remain in the hands of the families of the original owners. We have another 18' canoe that --as far as I can tell-- does not have a serial number. I will have a closer look when I can. Two of these canoes are lake worthy --having been re-canvased within the last 15-20 years. I'm interested in exploring restoration options for the two others.

The build records and shipping info you shared are intriguing, and add much to the story. I joined the WCHA, and look forward to exploring more.

Kind regards,

Mac
