serial number

If that is an Old Town canoe, there are no letters in the serial number. On the odd chance your boat is actually 112258 instead of J, that number appeard on the record for an 18' Guide Model in CS (common sense) grade. Birch seats, decks & thwarts. It was painted slate (gray-blue) and delivered to a camp in Ranier, Minn in April of 1938. Since about 21% of the Old Town Canoes were 18', this may or may not be the boat in question. If you can confirm it is a Guide, that would narrow it down considerable, since Guides amounted to only about 6% of the boats. If it has original paint (hard to detect sometimes) only 2% were painted slate.
Build record for 112258 is attached.

Scans of approximately 210,000 records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. Please join WCHA or make a tax deductable contribution so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join. If you are already a WCHA member, THANK YOU!

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
