Hello,

I have what I believe to be a OTCA model 16 foot with serial number 31829 16. Thank you for any information you can provide about its history!

The Old Town canoe with serial number 31829 is a 17 foot long Charles River model so that probably isn't your canoe. My guess is that you have the one with serial number 131829. This is a 16 foot long, CS (Common Sense) grade, Otca model with open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch trim, and a keel. It was built between March and May, 1941. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped to Eagle River, Wisconsin on June 3rd, 1941. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

thank you

You are right! With a second look, there is a 1 that is just barely noticable, so slight that I didn't see it the first time at either end of the canoe. Many thanks for such a quick reply.

A little tip that I just found by accident: the difficult-to-read serial number was actually easier to see under red light instead of white!

Again, thank you.
