Serial number lookup for 16' canoe

I just picked up a 16' OT canoe with serial number 145881 16 or maybe 145887 16

Can anyone look up manufacturing details for this canoe? I bought it in Hayward, WI and have no further information

I'm especially interested to learn what species the planking is. Red or white cedar?

Thanks in advance

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town with serial number 145881 is 18 feet long and 145887 is a 15 foot long rowboat so neither of those are a good match. My guess is that you may have serial number 145831. This is a 16 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, HW model with open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, and a keel. It was built between June and August, 1946. The original exterior color was aluminum. It shipped on August 27th, 1946 to Minneapolis, Minnesota. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join, or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. The planking is probably red cedar as described at https://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/specific.gif in the catalog. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the project,

Benson
