Serial # 198679 18

Ot #198697

Al,

Thanks for visiting the WCHA website. The canoe SN you inquire about was shipped on January 2, 1974 to the Houston Canoe Sales and Rental Company
as a 17' Chipewyan model, the original color was red and the weight was 76#. Not much else is depicted in the build record which is attached.

This service is brought about by several volunteer members and grants from various sources to help preserve the older canoe. If not already a member, please consider joining for valuable advice and a great bunch of folks dedicated to the preservation of the canoe.

All the best,

Ric Altfather

Noticed your request that we double-check the serial # record. Old Town # 198679 was issued to an 18' OTCA, originally painted Yale Blue and shipped on April 3 1974 to Newbury, MA. It had outside stems, a keel and two painter rings. Looks as though it must have gotten banged up during that first year of use, as it was returned to OT late that October for repairs. It was re-canvased and the keel and outside stems replaced, as well as being re-painted (but doesn't say whether the color was changed or remained the same). It was picked up by the original purchaser in March 1975. Build record and repair notes are found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the update on the canoe. I knew it was not the one I have. But I rechecked the serial number today to make sure I didn't have a senior moment, I also have many, and was going to ask for a recheck.
Thanks for the info. The canoe is currently yellow but the previous owner had repainted and fiberglassed the canoe some years ago.
Thanks again
Al
