Seeking info for No. 129248

Curious about Wooden Canoes
I’m helping a friend who found a gorgeous 18-foot sailing canoe - serial number is 129248 and “18” is stamped about six inches to the right (maybe 18 feet?). Also, the “1” is off center to the rest of the numbers, and almost resembles an upside-down “T,” if that makes any difference.
Any help or a copy of build sheet warmly appreciated.
Thank you,

Welcome, the Old Town canoe with serial number 129248 is an 18 foot long, AA (or top) grade, HW (Heavy Water) model with open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, a keel, a floor rack, a mast seat, a mast step, a rudder, and number 6 canvas. It was built between February, 1940 and June, 1941. The original exterior paint color bright red. It shipped on July 11th, 1941(?) to Montgomery, New York. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link under the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you so much! The canoe is exactly as described, with all parts and accessories present - including sails and keel - and original red paint is complete and in beautiful shape too!

Oops - Benson, you are correct - the photo of this number is one I took off eBay to text to my friend who found the canoe - to show him what to look for on the one he had. I will try to delete it.

Here is the correct picture.

The canoe was shipped/purchased by a guy in Montgomery, NY. Montgomery is in Orange County, Hudson valley town not that far from where I live. Town was named after General Richard Montgomery who got himself killed at the Battle of Quebec in the Revolutionary War, December 1775.

It looks like a very nice canoe. Enjoy.
