What structural element are the ribs and half ribs nailed to? I assume it must be a longitudinal 'stringer' recessed into the mold specifically for securing the half ribs primarily?
I don't recall a technical term for those stringers but they are commonly found in Thompson canoes like the Hiawatha and a few other mid-west builders as shown in the link below.
I think most folks call them bilge stringers, they are recessed into the form itself, and they are there because it is a old Thompson form, they are kind a pain to plank around, never sure when a tack is next it, or on top of it, under the planks.
