I bought this canoe when I was 12. I am recanvasing it . serial #72587 17 can you give any information. thanks D.C.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 72587 is an 18 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, HW (Heavy Water) model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, a keel, and sponsons. It was built between June and July, 1922. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on July 13th, 1922 to South Rangeley, Maine.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

You may have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. The space and the 17 at the end which you described is usually an indication of a 17 foot long canoe. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?791 may help you discover if there are any missing or hidden digits. Can you verify the exact overall length between the extreme ends of the canoe and attach some pictures, especially ones showing the decks and all of the serial numbers on the inside stems from each end? I have checked the records for 72537, 172587, and 172537 but didn't find a 17 foot long canoe there either. Please feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

My canoe is 17 feet long has mahogany gunwales. I can clearly see the 2578 17 but the first digit is hard to make out I thought it may be a 7 but I can't tell for sure

This number looks much more promising. The Old Town canoe with serial number 72578 is a 17 foot long, AA (or top) grade, HW (Heavy Water) model with red Western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, and may have had a floor rack. It was built between June and August, 1922. The original exterior paint color was brown with a light brown border stripe and a half inch gold stripe and turned down ends. It was probably similar to the image at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design12.gif which was later known as design number 12. The name "Gertrude" was added in gold on the right bow and left stern. It shipped on August 19th, 1922 to Providence, Rhode Island. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Is any of the original design still showing on the old canvas and can you attach a picture? Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

I think that is it. I bought it from a man in Central Falls R.I. In 1959 or 60 and it has all mahogany seats thwarts deck and gunwales. I recanvased it in 1960 so I have no old canvas.
