Hi! I’m new here and am starting a couple projects. I brought this one home today- full of issues, but it was incredibly cheap.

I’m stumped as to what it is. Decks show mitered or inlet inwales. Here are a few specs- 15’ by 36”. No markings or remnants of decals or emblems or serial numbers. It’s very light. Has a little poly bondo in places.

Update- I’m told we have a Chestnut. Original owners told me this. Upon inspection it seems the decks were replaced and the ends of inwales trimmed for an old fit repair.

Very nice.
That's an interesting method for repairing rotted tips. A new deck notched to accommodate trimmed-back inwhales. I think it looks nicer than a new deck plus splices for the inwhales Curious to know which approach is considered "best".

I don’t think it’s a Chestnut. It doesn’t have the wide cant ribs and the rib profile doesn’t look right. My impression is that the decks are original and that perhaps it was built by someone like Bastien Brothers who used that type of “arrowhead”deck construction.

Dan, thanks! I’ve poured over photos and find bits and pieces of similarities. It has very nice planking- I’ve torn off the fiberglass and resin. I see a stem scarf on both ends looks to have been done well, and planks replaced at both ends. Thanks for your insight!

Like Dan said... looks Bastien or Huronish.
More photos would help. Is there a rabbet in the outwales? Were the seats originally babiche?

Dave-
Here are a couple pictures. Copper/bronze nails. Ash outwales have a rabbet. Seats look to be white oak or ash frames and may have been babiche. 5/32” planking.

Looks like a good project. Don't forget that we have some restorers and repairers in the Three Rivers Chapter. They are always more than willing to give advice and suggestions. I see that Fred Capenos has already chimed in to this thread and I'm sure that other members are out there looking at your progress too. Hopefully you will get the input that you need. This web site forum is the best place to look for information, but don't forget that there is also a Facebook Page (Fans of the WCHA, https://www.facebook.com/groups/219179608982/) that is an open group.
And don't forget to post progress picture too. -- Millie Sass
