Hi all,
New to the forum....GREAT place! Just picked up an Old Town and wondered if you could offer some help. Serial number is 175276. Canvas needs to be repaired but a really solid unit. Looking forward to your replies.

Thanks,
JP

Welcome--

Old Town 175276 is a 17 foot Otca model canoe that was completed October-December 1965 with 2 3/4" planking, mahogany decks and a keel. The stern seat was moved 2" ahead. Original color was white. It was shipped to Newington, Connecticut on January 4, 1966.

A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Kathy

Thank you so much for your your help. It would appear that this is indeed the correct description of our canoe! Now can anyone direct me to a site to accurately put a value on it? We are not sure if we are currently in a position to restore her to her former beauty and are weighing our options. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. I was just looking at the Craigslist listing and saw you had picked it up.
I hope you join WCHA - great group of people, I joined 2 years ago when I picked up a 1951 Yankee about 30 minutes from where your canoe was.
I've met a lot of great people in WCHA - they have all been willing to help newbies like me as well as the "seasoned" members.

Regarding value, it's not an investment, it's an obsession. The first time you paddle her after restoring her, you get an idea of the real value.

I've restored 2 canoes in the past 2 years, "repaired" one (poorly) in the 80's and have one in queue.
On Wednesday I saw the canoe from the 80's that I sold in 1992 for the first time in 23 tears.

The cedar gets into your blood - enjoy.

Hope to see you at Assembly.

Russ
