I just purchased an Old Town Canoe serial # 147684, it is good shape for its age, I think, but would like more information on it. any suggestions.

Hello Herman,

Old Town 147684 is a 16 foot CS (common sense or middle) grade Yankee model canoe that was completed February to April of 1947. It has spruce planking and open pine gunwales, both of which are unusual-- planking is usually cedar and gunwales spruce. Wood species of decks, thwarts and seats is unspecified but would be any hardwood other than mahogany. Seats may be slat rather than cane, as it took a while for the cane supply to be restored following WWII. The canoe has half-ribs (a nice feature) and a keel. It was originally dark green. It was shipped to Niles, MI, on May 9, 1947.

The Yankee model was discontinued in 1957, and the form has been used to build the 16 foot Otca model since that time.

If you have specific questions about restoration, post pictures and folks here will give you suggestions. Image of the scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Kathy
