Just getting around to dating my Old Town. Found it in an antique shop in Houghton Mich. It was in overall very good condition save the deteriorating robin-egg blue paint - possibly original(?). Also wondering if eye bolts in decks might have been an add-on at the factory. Any info or input would be appreciated. Thanks

The Old Town canoe with serial number 174701 is a 15 foot long fifty pound model with a keel and narrow two and 3/4 inch planking. It was built between March and May, 1965. The original exterior paint color was pale blue so it may be original. It shipped on June 2nd, 1965 to South Weymouth, Mass. The back side of the card indicates that it might have moved to Daytona Beach, Florida by February 14th, 1980 when a previous request for a copy of the build record was answered. Scans of both sides of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

These scans were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Old Town used a variety of painter rings over the years from different manufacturers and at various locations on the canoe. A common one was mounted through the bang plate or on the deck as shown at http://www.ebay.com/itm/280852265638 for a bit more than the original list price of $2 in 1965. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
