I freely admit to having made lots of mistakes over the years, so it is somewhat comforting to see that other people have also made a few occasionally. The picture below shows a Kennebec tag with an inverted serial number on a canoe listed in the classifieds.
The Kennebec records indicate that this canoe was railed by Grant on Saturday, April 17th, 1920 and shipped to Abercrombie & Fitch. They were probably scrambling to get things ready to go out the door at that time of year. Currency and postage stamps with errors can be worth a lot of money but I'm not sure that the same applies to the serial number tags on canoes.
