Being reported today that one canoer died when a pilot whale (more likely dolphin) upset a canoe off Provincetown Harbor. Other paddler was rescued and lived. I assume hypothermia was an issue.
Sad, but I can see it happening.
My wife and I once experienced a seal swimming around our Kennebec while we were paddling in Cobscook Bay.
It's pretty alarming when something that big is playing next to your canoe.
We were never quite sure how close it was going to get.
It surfaced a few times within literal inches of us and then took off.
Strange things can happen when you're paddling. A few years back, a man and his son were kayaking on the Brandywine River in SE Pennsylvania, when a tree fell on him killing him. Even when you are doing everything right.....you never know.
Saltwater paddling can be adventerous even on a calm day. Seals are very common in places like the San Juan Islands of Washington state where they frequently swim under your boat. I have seen orcas from a powerboat many times, but have not seen them from a sea kayak or canoe. I have witnessed people in kayaks within 30 yards of orcas which is probably not safe and not legal either under the Marine Mammal Act or whatever the name of it is. Be careful out there. On the Sacramento River, salmon up to 60 pounds have swum under my canoe close enough to reach out and touch them.
