The Old Town canoe with serial number 181879 is a 17 foot long Otca model with a keel. It was built between November and December, 1968. The original exterior paint color was pale blue. It shipped on January 3rd, 1969 to Sheffield Lake, Ohio. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.
This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.
It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
My canoe #181,879 states it is an OTCA model built in late 1968. The question is that the dimensions reflect a H.W. Model. It is 34" wide, 12" in depth, the deck is the same as a H.W. Did Old Town change the name of this canoe in the 60's?
The Otca decks were changed to the short ones like the HW in 1957 and the 17 foot long Otca was was listed as being 12 inches deep and 35 inches wide starting in 1966. My guess is that yours just happened to get a slightly shorter middle thwart at some point.
Again, thank you for the information. The OTCA has a width of 35" where this canoe has a width of 34", same as a HW. Is it possible that this canoe is a HW? The wood on this canoe is in perfect condition. I don't think the previous owner ever used this canoe.
