Old Town

Wooden Canoe Maniac
18669 18 It has Carleton decks. The build sheet I got with this canoe sounds correct. AA grade HW model but the sheet says 16 feet. and she's an 18 footer. Dated 7-1-1912 any help would be appreciated. Dave

The Old Town canoe with serial number 18669 is 16 feet long so that isn't a good match. The Carleton canoe with this number is an 18 foot long, Indian Princess (or top) grade, Carleton model with red western cedar planking, closed mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, and outside stems. It was built between February and May, 1924. The original exterior paint color was cream enamel with a light blue border and turned down ends. There was also a half inch gold stripe with a double poppy scroll edged with carmine. The top rail cap was a quarter inch by one inch with rounded edges. The side rail was oval and 3/8 inches by 13/16 inches. It shipped on July 1st, 1924 to Springfield, Massachusetts. Scans showing both build records are attached below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join, or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Please post some pictures if the original design is still showing. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

WOW ! Thanks Benson. That's what I have the Carleton Indian Princess. The canoe came with that 1912 build sheet. I new something wasn't correct.

I wish, This is a really good looking boat. But...it's been fiberglassed. I though about restoring it. I'm pretty sure I'm just going to sell it. If I do I'll post it here first. Dave

Learning the lingo here...can anyone share any example of ..."turned down ends"..."a half inch gold stripe with a double poppy scroll edged with carmine"? Thanks in advance!
