Old Town Serial Number

Hello... we’ve had the wooden bones of an Old Town canoe for ages. It’s in rough shape, missing the canvas and who knows what trim pieces. But it’s still pretty solid! The serial number is 142870-16. Can you tell us anything about it or provide a build record? Thanks.

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 142870 is a 16 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Yankee model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, half ribs, a keel, outside stems, and a brass B. P. (Bang Plate?). It was built between September, 1945 and January, 1946. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on March 12th, 1944 to the New Brunswick, New Jersey. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the restoration,

Benson

Thanks Benson. Very interesting. By looking up Herbert F. Grote, we learned he ran a canoe and rowboat rental business from a dock near his home in the 1960’s. Will continue to look for the connections as to how we got the canoe!
