Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hello,

I am the extremely fortunate new owner of an Old Town Sailing Canoe, Serial No. 171396 15. She is in beautiful condition, complete with the entire sailing rig, as well as a removable rowing/sculling seat with oars. Can someone possibly give me the information/history on this canoe?

Many thanks,

Rob Bergh

Congratulations on your new canoe - I hope you have a lot of fun plying the waters of the Cape.

171396 was assigned to a 15' Fifty pound model with a keel. There is no mention of a sailing rig in the build record, but that was a common add-on later. It was originally painted dark green and shipped to Boston Mass in 1962. A copy of the build record is attached.

Scans of approximately 210,000 records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. Please join WCHA or make a tax deductable contribution so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA, http://www.wcha.org/wcha_video.php to watch a 10 minute video about WCHA and our programs and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join. If you are already a WCHA member, THANK YOU!

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Mike,

Thank you SO MUCH for the information and such a prompt reply. How wonderful to find at the top of the Build Record, the name of the gentleman whose wife I purchased the canoe from...

The internet makes this a very small world, indeed!
