Old Town Oceanboat serial# 8132

Rich Bush

Curious about Wooden Canoes
Can someone confirm that serial #3182 is realy a 1930's Old Town Oceanboat.

I just bought it, and looking for more info.

Thanks,

Rich

Well, the Old Town serial number record for 3182 is missing but this would have been from 1906. The one for 8132 shows a canoe from 1908. The Oceanboat model was listed in the catalogs from 1931 to 1956 and the chart at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/oldtown_chart.html indicates that boats from this time period would have a serial number between 100,000 and 160,000. I checked all of the records with the 1x3182 and 1x8182 format in this range and did not find an Oceanboat model. The only large boat was the lapstrake outboard from 1947 as shown below.

This scan is one of several hundred thousand that were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join.

You may want to double check your serial number and confirm the size and model of boat that you have. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?t=791 may help. Old Town boats usually also have the serial numbers stamped on the top edge of the transom.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

The Old Town boat with serial number 98132 is a 16 foot long, AA grade, Sea model boat with red Western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, 60 inch mahogany decks, mahogany trim, a keel, a floor rack, bilge keels, 2 back rests, oarlocks, and a painter ring. It was built in 1928. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It first shipped on May 7th, 1928 to Massachusetts and was returned for credit on November 9th, 1939. (This may be a typographical error intended to be 1929 since it would be highly unusual to have a return for credit over a decade later.) It returned again on August 14th, 1953 from Wilmington, Delaware. A scanned copy of this build record can be found by following the link behind the attached thumbnail image below.

The Sea model is a slightly smaller version of the Oceanboat model. It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your boat. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

I thought the Oceanboat to be 16' and the Sea 18'

The canvas covered Oceanboat and the canvas covered Sea model were only available in a 16 foot length. The Oceanboat was wider and deeper than the Sea model. The all-wood versions of the Sea model were available in 14, 16, and 18 foot lengths. More details about these and other Old Town models are available from http://store.wcha.org/The-Complete-Old-Town-Canoe-Company-Catalog-Collection-CD-ROM.html in the catalog collection. Let me know if this doesn't answer your question. Thanks,

Benson
