Curious about Wooden Canoes
Folks,
A couple of months ago, I purchased an Old Town canoe that had been woefully abused over the years, with fiberglass slapped over fiberglass over fiberglass (even over one of the decks (because the owner had some fiberglass and resin he wanted to use up, he said). Anyway, it has only one broken rib and the hull is sound.
I've located the serial number (under resin that was over varnish! Jeesh.): 75782.
I respectfully request any info on this canoe that the forum can provide to me.
Cheers to you.
David

Folks,
Perhaps I should have been more direct by simply asking that someone kindly submit my OT's serial number into the electronic archive. The number is 75782.
Of course, it could be I'm being characteristically impatient also.
In any case, thanks in advance for any/all assistance and info.
David

Hi David,

Your canoe is an 18' CS Grade (Common Sense or middle grade) Charles River model with open spruce gunwales, western cedar planking, birch decks, thwarts and seats. It was built in 1923, painted dark green and sold to Macy's.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe.

Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
