Old Town Chipewyan Tripper 17???

Captain Ollie West

Curious about Wooden Canoes
I just picked up an Old Town canoe. I think it is a mid 70s Chipewyan Tripper 17.
It is 17 feet long and red in color.

I can't find a hull identification number. There is a serial number stamped into the hull. I think it reads 212686. The last diget may also be a zero.

Is this a Chipewyan Tripper 17?

Is the hull the same as a newer Tripper 172?

Thanks in advance for any information you all may have.

Welcome and congratulations, these forums are very small so there is no need to repost. My guess is that you have the Old Town canoe with serial number 212686 since 212680 is blue. This is a 17 foot long Chipewyan Tripper model with aluminum inserts in the rails that weighed 74 pounds. It was built in March, 1976. The original exterior color was red. It shipped on November 10th, 1976 to Portland, Oregon. The back side of the record indicates that there were some lines and two small small skin break on the inside plus some scuffs on the outside at the bow end. Scans showing both sides these two build records can be found below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join, or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. It is the same hull shape as the newer Tripper 172. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Have fun with it,

Benson

Thank you for the fast reply. I picked it up in Ellensburg Washington so Portland Oregon makes sense.

It is in really good shape, especially for her age.

It will be replacing a Wenonah Fisherman 16 (Adirondak). The Wenonah is great canoe, but my bow paddler outgrew it. The bow is pretty tight.

Is the Chipewyan 17 the same as the Tripper 172?
