My family has an Old Town canoe with a sail rig that has a serial number of 112396 17. I was wondering if there is more information about it. Thanks!

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 112396 is a 17 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, HW model with western red cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, oak decks, oak thwarts, oak seats, and a keel. It was built between February, and June, 1933. The original exterior paint color design was similar to the one shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design40.gif which was known as the design number 40. It shipped on June 21st, 1933 to Scranton, Pennsylvania. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/pricing-plans/join to donate or renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer this description doesn't match the canoe. Canoes with a family connection are always extra special. The sail rig is not mentioned on the build record so that was probably added after it left the factory. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the info! There is also a Greene of Scranton placard on the canoe which looks like was placed after a restoration since the wood and the seat caning are in excellent shape for a canoe that is almost 100 years old. Perhaps the sailing rig was added then.
