old town canoe serial number

Well it doesn't tell me much since the Old Town, Carleton, and Kennebec canoes with this serial number are all 17 feet long. Some pictures of the bow deck, serial numbers, profile, and interior might help narrow it down. The pictures at http://dragonflycanoe.com/wood-canoe-identification-guide/features-decks/ may help if pictures aren't possible. It could also be a Morris or other manufacturer whose records have been lost. What does it look like?

The Old Town canoe with serial number 13046 is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Charles River model with red Western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, spruce finish rails, a keel, and four spruce paddles. It was built between December, 1909 and April, 1910. The original exterior paint color was bright red. It shipped on April 21st, 1910 to R. N. Shaw in Middleboro, Mass. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. I have also attached the Carleton record for this serial number in case that is a better match for your canoe. One of the restorers listed at http://www.wcha.org/buildsupply/ should be able to replace the canvas on it for you. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

The serial number is 13046.Its an Old Town canoe. The information I got from Old Town is that it was built in1911 & sold to Briggs & Stratton the following year. It needs to be re-canvased ,who would do that

Kevin-- To be clear, if your canoe is indeed an Old Town with serial number 13046, then the proper build record is the one on the left in the attached thumbnails Benson provided. It was shipped in 1910 to Massachusetts. The information you got from Old Town is in error for that serial number. It isn't at all unusual for the wrong record to be attached to a canoe-- for one reason or another. Several builders used decks similar to Old Town's, and many builders used a similar serial number format. It would help greatly if you posted pictures of your canoe-- we all learn from this and those of us who use this site love to see what others have found-- we'd really like to see your canoe! We'd also like to see it once the new canvas is on and it's launched into the water.

If you have trouble posting images, there's a description here: http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?469-How-to-post-photos
