old town canoe 147197-18

Hi,I have had this canoe for a long time and have never used it,i would like to sell it in the hopes that someone will ! I was wondering if you had any information on this canoe and how much do you think is a fair price to sell it? It is red,but the paint is pealing and almost gone, the previous owner said he painted it with the wrong paint so it is pealing, but other wise looks to be solid and water worthy.
Thank you so much for your time!

Hello Quentin,

Old Town 147197 is an 18 foot Guide model canoe, wrongly listed on the build record as AA grade-- should be CS (common sense or middle) as it has ash trim and not mahogany unless the "ash" is wrong and the canoe actually is trimmed in mahogany. The canoe was finished December of 1946-April 1947. it has white Maine cedar planking, open ash gunwales and ash decks, thwarts, and seat frames. As this canoe is "war era" it might have slat seats rather than cane, or cane seats may have been installed when cane became available. The canoe has half ribs and outside stems, was fitted with a keel and 1/2" bang plate and originally was painted dark brown. It was shipped to Lake George, NY, on April 12, 1947. A copy of the record is attached-- click on it to get a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

There is information on "value" here: http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?57-How-much-is-my-old-wooden-canoe-worth

Best of luck re-homing your canoe, and send the buyer our way if he/she has questions!

Kathy
