Old Town barn finds, serial #'s

The Old Town canoe with serial number 192402 is a 17 foot long Otca model with a keel, outside stems, and a floor rack. It was built between December, 1972 and April, 1973. The original exterior paint design was similar to the one shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design04.gif which was known as the design number four. It shipped on April 23rd, 1973 to Winslow, Maine.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 127631 is a 17 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, HW model with open spruce gunwales, a floor rack, and sponsons. It was built between May, 1939 and January, 1940. The original exterior paint color was dark red with a white hair line stripe or H. S. S. initials. It shipped on March 25th, 1940 to Long Island City, New York.

Scan showing these build records can be found below. These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or renew.

It is also possible that you could have other numbers or manufacturers if these descriptions don't match the canoes. Please post some pictures if the original designs are still showing. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks Benson, sponsons are long gone but I can see where they were connected. No seats with either canoe, however must of the hard work has been done. Took some washing to get years of dust and bird crap off them. Let the fun begin.
