Can anyone help identify this number? I just purchased this today, it needs restoration but is in very good condition. The gentleman I bought it from had no information about it. Thanks for your help. Jack

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town with serial number 87036 is a 16 foot long, AA (or top) grade, speed square stern model with red western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, a keel, outside stems, a floor rack, and sponsons. It was built between February and April, 1925. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on May, 6th, 1925 to Lincoln, Maine. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you so much for the information. It is amazing to think this information is available and these canoes have survived. I will be restoring this one next winter in the shop. Thanks again! Jack

My guess is that the lower sheer line on the bow of the square stern model introduced in the 1925 catalog was known as the 'speed' version but I have never found any other documentation to confirm this. The 1924 and 1925 catalog pages showing the change in this model are attached below. Can you confirm if this one has the flatter bow profile or attach some pictures? Thanks,

Benson

Hi Jack. I am working on a “Speed” square stern and am wondering if you still have yours. Can you post pictures? I am particularly interested in the shape of the bilges at the transom and the shape of the gunwales at the transom. The boat we have is showing a distinct sudden flare at both of these locations and we are wondering if these are primal shapes or added at previous restorations. Thanks, Nick
