Wooden Canoes are in the Blood
In Memoriam
Could I bother you good folks for the build record for this Old Town? I don't know the length of the canoe at this point.

Many Thanks,

Fitz.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 29567 is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Charles River model with red western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, a keel, and may have long decks. It was built between December, 1913 and March, 1914. The original exterior paint color was auto gray. It shipped on March 26th, 1914 to Great Falls, Montana. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson

I think we have the wrong number. I took a look at a photo and I think there may be "1" preceding the digits. How about 129567?

If that doesn't work, we will try and get a better look and photo.

Thanks again,

Fitz

129567-17 is the correct number. I finally got around to finishing this CS grade HW. I have had it way too long. It was glassed, needed quite a few ribs, some planking, a new center thwart, a new keel, new outwales, seat cane, paddle repairs and floor rack repairs. Kirby's Blind Green Paint, which seems a bit darker in real life.

It should be good for awhile now.

Nice job, Fitz, especially for the amount of work it needed. And the color looks great.
