LOVES Wooden Canoes
Hi Benson,
I read an earlier thread regarding canoes with numbers greater that 250000 but also saw that you were able to work your magic and get a copy of the build sheet.
Can you please provide information regarding 257800 16. A person contacted me as he saw a 16ft Guide that I had posted and sold on WCHA site and wanted to know if I could help.
Were or are the later plank and canvas built by Island Falls for Johnson?
thanks & have a great weekend
joe

I don't have easy access to the build record for number 257800, unfortunately. The last two digits of the hull identification number on the starboard stern will have the model year. Wooden canoe production was moved to Island Falls Canoe in 2010. They started with serial number 787030 and have continued up through 787073 in 2020. Sorry,

Benson

Better late than never? I stopped by the factory this week and had a chance to look up some records. The Old Town with serial number 257800 is a 15 foot long Trapper model with canvas covering, a floor rack, two painter rings, and outside stems that weighed 78 pounds. It was built between May and August, 1984. The original exterior paint colors were green with white on top. It shipped on November 21st, 1984 to Concord, Massachusetts. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join, or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck,

Benson
