Old Town 19657

The Old Town canoe with serial number 19657 has closed gunwales and a floor rack so that isn't a good match for the pictures you sent to the WCHA showing a canoe with open gunwales, no floor rack, and heart shaped decks. My guess is that you actually have the Carleton canoe with that serial number. This is a 17 foot long, regular grade, Carleton model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, oak decks, oak thwarts, oak seats, and a keel. It was built between February, 1927 and March, 1928. The original exterior paint color was dark green with a two inch white stripe. It shipped on April 2nd, 1928 to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Wow! You are exactly right—it’s the Carleton!
Because you’ve seen a lot of these before, can you tell who it was originally sent to? Perhaps a store? Or do you think it was a private individual? I can’t read the handwriting.

This appears to have shipped to the Lit Brothers department store as described in more detail at the first link below. Most canoes were sent to dealers like this. The second link below describes this canoe in more detail from the 1930 Carleton Canoe catalog. Old Town purchased Carleton in 1910 so this canoe was made in the same factory as the Old Town canoes from that era. Let me know if you have any other questions,

Benson
