I'm looking for data on an old town canoe number 27751 17. The "5" may be incorrect--possibly an "8". Thanks for the help. Hopefully i'll be restoring this canoe. Thanks, steve wilkie

Hello Steve-- Interestingly, the records for both numbers show a very similar canoe, and you'll have to look at the canoe's destination for the one most-likely to be yours-- PLUS (and this is a good one) one of the canoes originally had sponsons... and even if the sponsons have gone away, there are tell-tale clues to their once having been there.

Old Town 27751 is a 17 foot CS (common sense or middle) grade HW (heavy water) model canoe that was completed July-August of 1913, with red Western cedar planking, CLOSED spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seat frames, and a keel. Originally it was dark green. It was shipped October 2, 1913 to Baltimore, MD.

Old Town 27781 is a 17 foot CS grade HW model canoe that was completed July of 1913 to June 1914, with red Western cedar planking, CLOSED spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seat frames, a keel and sponsons. It was originally (guess) dark green! It was shipped June 15, 1914 to Pittsburgh, PA.

If your canoe has no sponsons, Old Town commonly added small carry-thwarts at each end of their sponson canoes-- so look for that-- plus, there would be signs of something having been screwed to each side-- small plugged holes. But it's interesting how many old canoes have remained fairly close to their original destination.

Pictures are welcome, if you have them. Sounds like you have a nice old canoe-- should be a joy to see her back in the water!

Images of the scans of these records are attached below-- click to get a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available athttp://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Kathy
