LOVES Wooden Canoes
Would someone be so kind as to search Old Town serial number 16681 17? It's been roughed up a bit so it's a little hard to read, but this looks correct. Thanks very much.

Well, it might be 16661 17. Strange... it looks like there's one set of numbers stamped on top of another.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 16661 is 18 feet long so they probably just stamped the wrong digit the first time. (White-out doesn't work well on serial numbers.) The one with serial number 16681 is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, HW (heavy water) model with red western cedar planking, closed spruce rails, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, a keel, and a middle thwart. It was built between January and July, 1911. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on July 13th, 1911 to Philadelphia, Penna. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the attached thumbnail image below.

These scans were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or contribute to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
