I was given a near mint Old Town 18’ canoe with full sailing kit by a friend. The canoe appears to have never been used and Im really curious to know the history of the boat. The serial number printed in the boat is 122523. Is a build sheet available for this serial number? Also would anyone have any idea how much this canoe would weigh? Thank you in advance for any help, its greatly appreciated!

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 122523 is an 18 foot long Guide model with open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, and a keel. It was built between July, 1937 and March, 1938. The original exterior paint color was G. S. (Guide's Special) green. It shipped on June 11th, 1938 to Riverside, Illinois. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. The sail rig wasn't mentioned on the build record so that may have been added after it left the factory (which is not unusual). The catalog page at https://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/dimens-2.gif lists this canoe at 85 pounds or 150 pounds packed (without the sail rig). Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks Todd! “FormerMarine” didnt sound as smooth a user name lol. Thank you for your 30 year service to our country! Looking forward to learning about the canoe, resources like this are really valuable!

Benson provided the "Packed" weight. The canoe alone should weigh about 85lbs. or maybe I don't know my own strength! :-)
