Oh, Those Mahoganies....

So when Old Town built their "AA" grade canoes, which mahogany did they use? I have some pieces of African Mahogany, enough to make seat frames, thwarts, mast step, & probably decks, but not long enough for gunnels, so if I decide to upgrade the '46 OTCA from CS to AA grade, I'm considering (a) using the stock I have on hand, and (b) using the same species for the rails.

Any thoughts?

And where do you get 18-foot boards???

Look under "lumber Classifieds" and "Lumber Prices"

They used "Genuine" (Honduran?)or "Cuban" Mahogany. Comes from South America or the west Indies. In the lumber classifieds they have real deals for only a few thousand dollars.

There were a lot of guys salvaging old trees of Cuban after hurricane Andrew in Florida a few years ago. Don't know any more than I read in Fine Woodworking at the time.
