I have an old town canoe with different numbers at either end. Can any one help me properly identify it? Maybe double stamped at factory? Thanks in advance.

My guess is that you have the Old Town canoe with either serial number 99672 or 99724. These both are nearly identical 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Otca models with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, a keel, and a floor rack. These numbers were stamped on October 20th and 22nd in 1928 which were a Saturday and a Monday respectively so the numbering error probably occurred at the factory. The original exterior paint colors were different. The lower number was a two tone design number ten in blue and the higher one was all dark green. The image at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design10.gif shows how the design number ten looked in the usual green. They both shipped in 1929 to New Jersey and Michigan so the place where you found it may also provide a clue to the correct number.

Scans showing these build records can be found by following the links at the thumbnail images attached below. These scans and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

Please reply here if you have any other questions.
