The Old Town with serial number 86897 is an 16 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, speed square stern model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, maple decks, spruce thwarts, spruce seats, a keel, outside stems, a floor rack, and sponsons. It was built between February and May, 1925. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It is marked as being shipped on February, 9th, 1925 but this is probably a typographical error. It went to Troy, Penna. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail images below.
This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at

It is likely that you have another number since this build record doesn't show a 15 foot long canoe with two pointed ends. I looked at 186897 and a variety of other likely options but didn't find a better match. Some of the tricks at
http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?791 may help with serial numbers that are hard to read. Can you provide some pictures of the numbers from each end with the surrounding areas? Some images showing the decks and interior could also be useful, along with a confirmation of the extreme overall length in a straight line. Feel free to reply if you have any other questions.
